Unless you have some kind of health coverage, you are going to have to pay out of pocket for these expenses. What happens if they get measles or chicken pox and you have to go home on short notice? What are you supposed to do, and how can you recover some of the money you spent on hotels, resorts, or tours? Let’s say that you have your trip all planned out, have paid the fees, and reservation costs, purchased plane tickets and everything, but one or two days before you leave an emergency arises? You or your kids or wife come down with a sudden illness, you lose your job suddenly, or worse, have a death in the family and there is no way you are going to be able to go on your trip.
While the hotel and airlines may be sympathetic, being so close to your departure date, you probably won’t be able to get part or all of the money you have spent. How can you recover your losses? Let’s say for instance that you are taking advantage of great deals on Winter travel to exotic hot spots like the Caribbean. You are enjoying your vacation, and there is report of a strong hurricane coming your way. You may be required do evacuate, which will cut short your vacation. Even if there are only a few days left, you still may want to get some kind of money back, right?
For whatever the reason, this is where family travel insurance comes in. It can pay for non refundable costs when have to cancel your plans, for whatever reason. It can cover vacation interruptions, in case there is an emergency while you are out. It doesn’t matter if you are in the states or abroad, family travel insurance can help you recover at least some of your losses.
If for some reason you or one of your family members gets sick or injured while you are on vacation, having family travel insurance can cover these medical costs. This is important, because in some situations even in an emergency, if you don’t have some kind of insurance, you will be required to pay these costs up front, especially if you are an American traveling abroad.
There are many different ways to get family travel insurance coverage. For health insurance, you can speak with you own insurance agent, and either extend coverage, or even get extra temporary coverage. If you are a family from Canada, who is visiting the US for example, the your own policy would only pay for the same cost if you were at home, but treatment in the States may be more expensive. As a general rule of thumb, you should get some extra temporary insurance coverage just in case.
